When using music in documentary films, the rights issues can be especially confusing to navigate. What do you need to know about the difference between rights for a musical composition vs. a sound recording? Is it enough to have the artist's permission if a work has been published and released through a record label? Can you make an argument for fair use if music is playing in the background of a key scene? If you are commissioning original music through a composer, what should be considered in your contract? All these questions and more will be addressed at this workshop with Kurt R. Klauss, an entertainment attorney who counsels clients on matters involving television and film, music, the Internet, rights acquisitions and licensing, clearances, copyrights, trademarks, contracts, and small business issues.
