"Africa's Daughters" and "Equilibrium City," movies that take viewers far away and close to home, will be shown at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, as part of the NPC summer film series.
"Africa's Daughters," a film by broadcast journalist Natalie Halpern, captures the journey of two Ugandan girls with one big dream: to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. I spoke this week at DC Media Makers about community building and specifically DocumentaryClub.org. I presented about how the idea came about, what we do, and where we'd like to go from here. I had a lot of great suggestions and recommendations as to what make people want to participate in groups online and offline and how to cater to their specific needs. One of the most obvious that I thought I'd act on right away was making the site more accessible by getting rid of red fonts on black backgro… Continue

After much thought and mulling over suggestions, we're going to watch "Heckler". Here's a little preview.
Essentially it's a film by Jamie Kennedy that interviews actors, comedians, rock stars, athletes and people from all walks of celebrity and it's all about heckling. It takes a look at the vulgar underbelly of performance and how you deal with the pressures of audience members that want to undermine your act, your show, your career. It looks really good and I hope we all e… Continue

Crumb 1994
This movie chronicles the life and times of R. Crumb. Robert Crumb is the cartoonist/artist who drew Keep On Truckin', Fritz the Cat, and played a major pioneering role in the genesis of underground comix. Through interviews with his mother, two brothers, wife, and ex-girlfriends, as well as selections from his vast quantity of graphic art, we are treated to a darkly comic ride through one man's subconscious mind. As stream-of-consciousness images incessantly flow forth from th… Continue
